Media of the Hour - Haibane Renmei
Hiya! It sure has been a long time since I wrote a blog entry. That's embarrassing! What's even more embarrassing is that I don't have much to say at the moment aside from announcing that this page is now live. Oops...
I feel like there is a Sailor Moon GIF for everything.
Mostly, I'm just figuring life out! Working towards a career while trying to make time for art and creative writing/storytelling as one does. I have a lot of ideas, new and old, in my head that I hope to one day share in a proper format! I'd love to one day at least write a series or two.
To wrap things up, our Media of the Hour for this entry is Haibane Renmei, a philosophical fantasy anime from 2002. Produced by Radix, the anime was based off of the work of Yoshitoshi Abe, who many know for his role in creating Serial Experiments Lain, a popular and unsettling psychological thriller/science fiction anime. Compared to Lain, Haibane Renmei is much calmer, though the series does deal with more somber themes as it goes on. However, it is often regarded as having a much more hopeful atmosphere than Lain, even as the angel-like beings in the series must face their pasts and futures. As a word of warning: the first episode, while fantastic, is definitely one of the more intense ones.
I first became aware of Haibane Renmei during my teenage years, it being the first work I ever learned about from Yoshitoshi Abe. I've always been drawn to its melancholic yet gentle atmosphere and the intriguing story of the Haibane, the angel-like beings, and their destinies. The series has episodes that can be very intense in one instance, only for the following episode to be very calm and soothing to watch. However, I personally think this shift is done well. I am only at the start of the series, having never fully finished watching it, so I am excited to learn about the truth of the Haibane!
The artwork done for this anime has such a unique vibe!
That's all I have for now! Feel free to mention any classic anime favorites (especially underrated ones like Haibane Renmei here) in the chatbox on the homepage or in the guestbook. I love learning about new anime!
TTYL,
